Hephzibah Creswell is an ordinary girl from an ordinary farm labouring family in a small English village.
Known as Eppie to most of her family and friends, she has to work as hard as the rest of her family to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table. Apart from the odd bit of poaching here and there when needs must, they are good honest people, a loving family living in a close-knit community – with all the social baggage that comes with it.
Eppie’s life is overturned when her sister falls ill, and she has a decision to make. She sets out on an arduous journey in order to help her sister, but her actions lead to terrifying consequences for her whole family.
Who hates Eppie and her family so much they will stop at nothing to destroy them?
